Disneyland Paris - Day One

Our Eurostar from London St Pancras arrived at Marne La-Vallee Chessy (Parc Disneyland) at about 1:30pm on Monday March 21. We decided not to use the Disney Express baggage service inbound and went straight to lunch at Annette's Diner where we had hot dogs and fries. I have to say, I was disappointed in the service there - we were made to wait by the entrance until a table was clear for us however no Cast Member was around to explain the wait or apologise. Such a shame, not a very good start to our trip and only a taster of the 'laid-back' approach by Paris Cast Members.

Hotel Cheyenne, Disneyland Paris By the time we'd relaxed, adjusted and finished our food we headed for the bus to the Hotel Cheyenne. The bus didn't really take that long, which kind of shocked me but I knew the hotels were so close to the parks you could actually work to them so really I shouldn't have been so surprised. Checking in at the Cheyenne was very quick and without any queues, we also managed to get the very decent breakfast slots of 7am everyday - that seems early but we had a choice of 7am, or 10am and we knew we wanted early slots. After dropping our bags in our room we found the walkway from the hotel to the Disney Village and the parks. Our first stop was the main park, Disneyland Park.

PanoraMagique The weather was amazing, the sun was shining and it was a very perfect day to be outdoors, so the walk from the Hotel Cheyenne through the Village towards the park was great. One of the first 'attractions' you see on the walk is the ParnoraMagique balloon. There is a similar feature at Downtown Disney in Florida, it's a tethered balloon 'ride' that takes you high into the sky and straight back down again. We never took a ride on it in Florida, and we didn't this time in Paris either - although it would've been a great view on such clear days.

After walking through the Disney Village, where all the shops and restaurants are, we finally got to the park entrance. It looks and feels just like Florida as soon as you walk in.
Disneyland Paris Railroad

Sleeping Beauty's Castle The castle is beautiful, especially against the bright blue sky! When we'd got over the awe of the place we looked at the current wait times on the rides and they didn't seem too bad at all - it really is a quiet time of year. The first ride we went for was Phantom Manor (the Paris version of the Haunted Mansion). For years I'd been too afraid to ride the Haunted Mansion in Florida and finally gave it a go when James and I visited in September 2009 - we jumped the queue on a special behind the scenes tour of the Magic Kingdom park. It turned out to be pretty fun and not scary at all, so I was happy (although still slightly nervous) about riding the Phantom Manor.

After the Phantom Manor we were happy just walking around Adventureland and Frontierland, appreciating the differences and similarities to Walt Disney World in Florida. We soon ended up in Fantasyland and wandered right to the back where we went on the ride Le Pays des Contes de Fees - it's a really sweet boat ride through mini model 'towns' of well known fairy tales, as told by Disney. We really enjoyed the, obviously, new addition of the Rapunzel tower to the attraction. I also thought the Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast models were great!

Rapunzel's tower from Tangled Le Pays des Contes de Fees Le Pays des Contes de Fees

Next, while still in Fantasyland, we saw that there was practically no wait at all for It's a Small World - as one of the lead attractions in the park this really surprised me so we decided to take advantage and jump on! It's such an iconic Disneyland attraction in pretty much every park around the world, so to see it be quite run down and in need of a refurb was quite sad. The movement of the animatronics was slow, stuttered or non existant, there was an open roof so you could see all the beams, metal work and lights and the paint was rubbed off, peeling or faded on a lot of the displays. Definitely not what I expected of such a popular ride, it could definitely use some downtime and TLC!

Buzz Lightyear - Hidden Mickey To complete the full circle of all the 'lands' within the park we ended up in Discoveryland, the home of all things futuristic! The first ride we did here, Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast! By far my favourite ride, it's very much like it's WDW equivilant - apart from a French speaking Buzz! That was actually quite amusing, especially after in Toy Story 3 Buzz is reset to speak Spanish - it reminded me of that. I think we had to queue for about 15 minutes, which isn't too bad and James was really excited to have his first Hidden Mickey pointed out. I'd read and seen pictures of three tiny dots representing stars on the Buzz ride we printed so close together that they resembled a Mickey Mouse head - coincidence? I think not, Disney have hundreds of these little wonders 'hidden' all over their parks. My score on the Buzz Lightyear ride was alright, but I could always do better - maybe I need to ride it again?

The wait on Space Mountain is really short, so James jumped on there while I waited outside. After this we walked back to the main hub in front of the castle and debated some ideas for dinner - we settled on quick service from Casey's Corner. The sun was starting to set so we made our way to the park exit for the walk back through the Village to our hotel. We stopped in a couple of shops to browse the merchandise as we walked through the Village, lots of cute ornaments, pictures and, of course, pins I wanted to buy!

Back at Hotel Cheyenne, we kicked off our shoes to rest our tired feet and relaxed listening to some English radio that was set as a channel on the TV and I worked out our plan of action for our first full day in the Disneyland Park.

067. Visit 5 countries I've never been to before (1/5)

FRANCE: Paris

On Wednesday March 23 2011, James and I took time out from Disneyland Paris and got a train into the city of Paris to see some of the famous sights. On the itinerary we had the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Champs Elysees and Notre Dame.

The weather was absolutely perfect all week long, but especially amazing on this day. It's a shame we thought we'd be in the city until nightfall, so took our coats with us. This weighed is down, making the day more difficult, besides we managed to be back at Marne La-Vallee Chessy before it got dark anyway.

My poor little feet were worn out from all the walking around Disneyland, so we didn't make it to all our destinations but we did do quite well! Here are some pics of the sights we made it to see:

Louvre, Paris Arc de Triomphe du Carroussel near the Louvre, Paris
Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile, Paris La Tour Eiffel, Paris

We clearly didn't get to see it all and we didn't walk down to the Eiffel Tower - I couldn't make it! We will definitely plan to go back and spend more time in the city and see it all properly. And on the same trip maybe get the train to Disneyland so I can get another fix!

026. Make 101 Disney pin trades (40/101)

Disneyland Paris - Valentine's Day I've been making a few trades lately, but not that many - I've sent out lots of requests but rarely hear back. I've also been receiving lots of trade requests, but I've declined a lot of them. This Valentine's pin from Disneyland Paris is one of my favourites that I've traded for recently - I really wanted it because it's related to Paris, 2011 and a loved up Minnie and Mickey! James and I just got back from Paris, so I think it's a perfect fit into my collection.

I did buy some pins when I was at Disneyland Paris, just a few - I would've had more had I more cash to spend! Never mind, I'll be back there soon - right?

Pins from Disneyland Paris These are the four pins I bought for my collection, I got them based on them being souvenirs for our 2011 trip. The other two Stitch pins celebrate our visit to the city of Paris to see the Eiffel Tower and our 4 day stay at Disneyland Paris. I had to have the Spring (Printemps) pin featuring Stitch and Angel, we visited during a perfect sunny, spring week. Finally, who could go without a Mickey Mouse pin featuring the year of our visit?

Collecting pins is addictive and expensive!

025. Learn how to use my camera's manual settings

Moteurs... Action! Stunt Show Spectacular

While waiting in Disneyland Paris for the Moteurs...Action! Stunt Show to begin I decided to try out the panorama assistant on my camera. I had no idea how they would stitch together when I got the shots back home, all I could do was hope for the best.

Stitching them manually would take ages so I wondered how well the Windows Photo Gallery would cope with the pictures I got. It all turned out fantastic, above is just a small preview of how great the final picture looks. I can't wait to see how well the other panorama I tried of the Louvre in Paris turns out!

013. Eat at 10 new restaurants (1/10)

Covent Garden Grill James and I were in London on Sunday evening, so headed down to one of our favourite places, Covent Garden, for dinner. We usually eat somewhere in Leicester Square, but decided to go for a change and tried out the Covent Garden Grill. We chose to go here partly because we had a voucher printed from Quidco for a deal on two burgers for £15.

The burgers were great, but I was saving room for desert - that was chocolate cake and ice cream, of course. It was nice to go somewhere different for a meal even though we ate something pretty standard with burger and fries. I'm well known for not being very adventurous with my food, let's see where we end up having a meal next!

026. Make 101 Disney pin trades (37/101)

026-140311

Two pins and some cute stickers all the way from Hong Kong!

I mostly collect Stitch pins, but I'm getting more and more attracted to other pin subjects. Such as loved-up characters, just like these pins I got today. They're just so cute!

077. Have my hair cut every two months (1/14)

I've always found it a little nerve wracking going to a new salon and getting my hair done, but this morning I had an appointment in the city and went for it. I didn't have a dramatic change to my hair style, just a really good cut and refresh to the shape.

It turned out not to be that scary and I was treated very nice in this salon, unlike the last salon I tried close to where we live. I even booked a follow up appointment for the end of April! I will be taking better care of my hair from now on and will now be able to stop picking at my split ends!

044. Lose 50lbs, 10lbs at a time

I completely adore the show 'The Biggest Loser' - the American version - so really wanted to use it as inspiration to start losing weight.

I bought the Wii game called 'The Biggest Loser Challenge' at a bargain price of £8.85 from Zavvi and started the challenge on Thursday night. The intensity is high and I can see that they use a lot of the same workout techniques from the show. I let the game choose my workout plan so that it tells me which days I'm doing a certain routine and which days I rest and weigh-in.

Today was my second day using the game, Friday was a rest day. I'm determined to keep with it and complete the 12 week program set out for me. I'm also going to try really, really hard to eat less and not dip into the biscuit stash at work - there's always biscuits!

034. Buy curtains for the office

034_060311

My parents came down to visit us today, they brought with them tools, nails and a drill to hang all our pictures, shelves and new curtains. The previous tenants of our house left in one curtain pole in the office and it's the only room without an electric heater under the window, so it was perfect for fitting a pair of curtains. My Mum measured up for us and we both went down to Dunelm near the city to pick out a pair of curtains in the size we needed.

My Dad also fitted the IKEA Lack shelf that we've had for a long time. I'm hoping to get a wireless speaker/sub set to go on there for the PC - the speakers we have now are ancient and buzz because they're so close to the wireless router.

I'm really pleased with how the office is all coming together now. Just gotta get those boxes and fill the shelf with lots more Disney-themed goodies!

027. Send 20 postcards through postcrossing.com (11/20)

027-050311

I've written out some more postcards to send via the site Postcrossing - now up to 11/20 cards sent. I'm starting to receive some more cards as well, which is great!

Could do with a boost to my Disney postcard mission! I've not been 'out there' promoting it recently, I think I might try and give that a go next week.

035. Those IKEA Boxes.

I still don't have those boxes from eBay. This morning I received a package from the seller, it contained the right style and size boxes but in the wrong colour - I got black boxes. I ordered white.

I'm passed the 45 day limit to raise an official dispute with eBay but have contacted their customer service for advice. I have two items in my possession that I didn't want and didn't pay for. I now face having to pay to send both of those back, I've asked the seller to advise on this as well because it's not my error and I shouldn't have to pay.

I've requested that the seller dispatch the boxes I want on Monday to be delivered to me on Tuesday, which I think is reasonable given that I've been waiting 10 weeks!

UPDATE!

While I've been ranting blogging, the seller just messaged back with this:
Speechless...I will send the white one on Monday for you, please send the wrong one and I will reimburse for the P&P and refund the difference to your paypal account.

I could not be more relieved. If I was this seller I would be absolutely mortified by all these mistakes! At least I have the reassurance that they return fees will be covered.

So disappointed that I don't have them already, it just made me so angry when I got the black boxes that I wanted to cry! My parents are visiting tomorrow and I'm planning on cleaning and tidying the whole house tomorrow - having those boxes to finally organise my office would've been amazing. Never mind, there's always next weekend.

062. Save £100 a month (£300/£3300)

It's the beginning of the month, which means another £100 transferred into my savings.

This month is all about saving as much as we can and doing as little as possible, really. At the end of the month we go to Disneyland Paris, so we have to buy Euros and keep money aside for that trip. My evenings will be filled up with TV so I'm not tempted to buy things online, and our weekends will be filled with jobs around the house. No meals out and no takeaways!
